Turbine planned at Hunstanton Tesco
A WIND turbine is planned for Tesco in Hunstanton to help the supermarket giant reduce its carbon footprint and save money.
West Norfolk Council has received a planning application for a 10.6 metre high micro wind turbine for the site in Southend Road.
The six-kilowatt "slimline" turbine is destined for the store's car park. If all goes well it looks set to be in place next year.
Tesco spokesman Adam Fisher said the plan was part of Tesco's community plan to reduce its carbon emissions.
The Hunstanton turbine is destined to be among the first being rolled out by the company.
It would generate enough energy to power four households, said Mr Fisher, adding the power it produced would be used in store including for electronic tills.
"The company has just six turbines at the moment though 15 have passed the planning stage," said Mr Fisher.
"We are looking at our sites for suitability. Hunstanton will be one of the early ones."
More and more applications are being made for wind turbines in the light of a Government 'green energy' drive which wants ten per cent of the UK electricity supply generated by renewable energy by 2010.
Mr Fisher did not feel the Tesco turbine would be an issue with householders as it was at a commercial site.
It would have "quite low noise emissions" and not affect local people, he said.
"We are taking a progressive attitude towards carbon consumption," said Mr Fisher adding it was hoped the turbine, which will have a rotor diameter of 3.3m, would encourage more thought about 'green' issues.
