UFO lights turn out to be Chinese lanterns

THE mystery of "UFO"-type lights seen in the skies over North Wootton looks set to have finally been solved this week.

Lynn News readers contacted us after they saw a series of very bright low-flying objects in the sky on the evening of Saturday, August 22.

The objects were reported to be glowing and pulsing a very bright yellow and orange and travelling at different speeds and altitudes from west to east.

After the story appeared on our website, another reader emailed to say he had seen the objects at Wells-next-the-Sea.

"Four of us were sitting outside the tents at about 10pm when we saw one of these travelling close to the coast travelling east from Holkham towards Blakeney Point," said Barry Dean of Duxford, Cambridgeshire.

Simon Taylor had emailed in to suggest what had been seen were, in fact, Chinese lanterns – and his theory has now been supported.

Photographer Tom Peggs emailed in to say: "I was doing a wedding at the Ramada Hotel in Lynn and, yes, they were Chinese lanterns.

"It was part of a firework display; there must have been ten and 20 lanterns. It was very impressive. They drifted right over Fairstead and on to north of the town."

In addition, Jess Gilbert emailed to add: "The 'unidentified' objects in the night sky were Chinese lanterns from a wedding.

"Every guest was given one to write messages to the bride and groom on.

"The 'pulsing' light from them was the candle inside them."
