United Nations Day marked for first time in Lynn

A SPECIAL service was held in Lynn on Wednesday to mark United Nations Day, the first time such a service has been held in the town.

The 30-minute service, at 11am, was also the first service held in front of the new Field of Remembrance in Tower Gardens, a facility provided following an appeal spearheaded by the Lynn News.

Some 55 people attended the service, which was sponsored by the Norfolk and Lynn branches of the British Korean Veterans’ Association, with Ely branch BKVA members also attending.

Prayers were led by Grimston vicar the Reverend William Howard before Borough Mayor Kathy Mellish and her deputy Michael Langwade read lessons.

Mr Keith Thomson read a poem and the Last Post and Reveille were played by bugler Mr David Jackson.

Those laying wreaths included the Mayor, on behalf of West Norfolk Council, Mr Mike English, for the Royal British Legion, and Mr John Page, for the veterans’ association.

Refreshments were afterwards served at Lynn’s Royal British Legion Club to round the event off.
