Utilities firm energises its staff

UTILITY Savings Corporation (USC) has just been awarded the Investors in People accreditation.

USC has been successful trading as commercial utility brokers for electricity and gas supplies to businesses since 1998 and is one of the UK's largest independent utility brokers.

It is home-grown, having first started trading in Hunstanton and now operates its national brokerage from Docking.

Managing director and majority shareholder Chris Sykes, started the business when the electricity market was deregulated some eleven years ago and has built the business up, starting with friends and family, to now employing nearly 50 people.

USC looks after the energy requirements for thousands of businesses from the local village hall up to large multi-national companies with clients ranging from the tip of Scotland right down to the far south of England.

Over recent years USC has significantly grown from a small family-run business to the successful company it is today.

Alan Taylor, a director of the company who joined USC from the Lynn News two years ago said: "USC is a successful company because of the ethics of the business being fair to all concerned, and the high standards the company offers to every customer, however large or small".

USC specialises in offering all companies a free energy health check consisting of assessing clients current utilities and seeing if they can instantly save money, for example if they are currently out of contract.

As an employer of local people from all over West Norfolk, USC applied for the Investors in People accreditation as it has had some great staff success stories and believes in a happy and fair work culture and developing staff through the ranks, ensuring a fruitful career with the company.

One such example is director of the company, Nicola Jacklin. She is a 25-year-old board member who started with the company at 18 as an office administrator and now is a major part of USC's success.

The assessor of Investors in People marked USC with 100 per cent pass mark and particularly noted that the office had a great atmosphere, all staff enjoyed their work, had clear direction, felt valued and there was a sense of fun about being at work!

Mr Taylor said: "We are particularly proud of this accreditation, as we believe in the staff that we work alongside and would like everybody who works at the company to enjoy their work experiences.

"We are aware that any company is only as successful as their staff.

"At a time where the economy is struggling, it is really great to have something you are proud of achieving to shout about."
