Visible presence is beating crime
JUNE and July are festival months in Lynn and West Norfolk, a period which sees an influx of hundreds of additional visitors to our towns.
The police always work closely with the organisers of any major community event.
Hunstanton Carnival proved a success with no major issues. Over the next two weeks, Festival Too will be drawing people into the town centre and we will be working closely with CCTV, door staff and street marshalls to ensure those whose behaviour threatens to spoil the enjoyment of others are dealt with robustly at the earliest opportunity.
The warm weather is also encouraging more people to make the most of the borough's public parks and at The Walks in Lynn members of the Lynn North Safer Neighbourhood Team have been working with the management to identify and deal with any individuals found misusing the facilities.
The team is being particularly proactive in enforcing the Designated Public Place Order, which bans public drinking where it is likely to be a nuisance to others.
During the course of the past month, neighbourhood policing teams working in North Lynn, Gaywood, Fairstead and Downham have increased high-visibility patrols at key times to tackle a creeping rise in criminal damage offences. A number of arrests have been made and some youths dealt with by way of restorative justice – working in the community.
Though it's now in decline, criminal damage is still an issue and I would encourage anyone who witnesses vandalism to contact police on 999 to give us an opportunity to apprehend the offenders.
Lynn town centre officers have relaunched their successful Operation Wonderland to clamp down on retail crime. Local officers work closely with CCTV and retail workers to identify, locate and catch criminals operating in the town centre. In its first week, the team arrested four Chinese nationals in the town centre for credit card fraud believed to be on a national scale.
Enquiries remain on-going in respect of this but it underlines that West Norfolk is not a soft touch for criminals, local or otherwise.
