Walpole man started drugs at 11

MOBILE phone thief James Kelly had battled with drugs from an early age, Lynn magistrates heard on Wednesday.

His solicitor, Andrew Spence, told the court: "He started using cannabis when he was 11, progressed to cocaine when he was 16 and crack at 18, graduating to misuse of heroin when he was 20."

Kelly's pattern of offending over the years, including theft and burglary, was drug related, the court heard.

Kelly (26), of Kellyfenn Barn, Walpole Highway, was before the court for stealing a mobile phone from Costcutters in Lynn. He pleaded guilty and was conditionally discharged for two years with 60 costs.

Ms Yvonne Neill, prosecuting, said Kelly went to the store on January 14 at 8.40am. He was seen on CCTV stealing the manager's mobile phone, which had been left near the till. He later went to Lynn Police Station of his own accord and handed in the phone.

Andrew Spence, for Kelly, said his client was complying with a community order with a drug rehabilitation requirement and there were optimistic signs.

The theft was an opportunistic offence committed in a moment of stupidity. Kelly came to his senses when he heard on January 18 that police wanted to speak to him about the theft and surrendered himself, said Mr Spence.

Kelly had recently moved home because he wanted to disassociate himself from drug users in Lynn.

He had stopped taking drugs by going "cold turkey" and was motivated to change, added Mr Spence.
