WALPOLE ST PETER: Man died after surgery
A retired builder died following a lengthy operation at Lynn’s Queen Elizabeth hospital, an inquest heard on Monday.
David Anstee, 66, of Walpole St Peter, had suffered an aortic aneurysm and after discussion with a consultant had opted to undergo surgery to repair his arteries.
Dr Nicholas Redwood, consultant general vascular surgeon, said Mr Anstee had suffered an aneurysm and the arteries down to his legs were swollen. Mr Redwood said the operation became difficult so he called in a colleague to help.
Following the eight or nine hour operation Mr Anstee was extremely ill and went to the Intensive Care Unit where his condition deteriorated.
After a few days surgeons decided to try a further operation, but as Mr Anstee was being moved to theatre he suffered a heart attack and died.
Members of Mr Anstee’s family questioned Mr Redwood about the length of the operation and his decision to continue with it when it became apparant that it would be difficult.
Mr Redwood said: “These decisions have to be made all the time. I didn’t make this decision on a whim. This was a very considered decision and we have to make a decision based on experience.”
Coroner William Armstrong said Mr Anstee died following surgery for an underlying natural medical condition.
His cause of death was given a multi-organ failure.
