TREMENDOUS community fundraising was rewarded when SW Norfolk MP Elizabeth Truss officially opened a £45,000 car park at Watlington Village Hall.

The 74-space car park replaced an existing parking area which had become difficult to use because of pot holes.

The 18-month fundraising effort combined village hall funds, contributions from the parish council and from Watlington Sports and Social Club.

Individual donations were received, including a supply of gravel from aggregate company Frimstone. Clubs and societies affiliated to the hall also organised events.

Cyril Pike, the hall committee chairman, said: “The efforts of the community have been tremendous. They have enabled us to provide users of the hall with a car park fitting to the facilities on offer.”

He also praised the hard work of the hall officers, who had guided the project though in conjunction with surveyor John Stevenson.

Ms Truss was accompanied by Dr Hugh Lacey, who has just retired from Watlington Parish Council after 30 years of service, including 15 as chairman.

She was given a tour of the building, which was first built in 1988 and extended in 2000, visiting a dancing school in the main hall and a coffee morning in the small hall.

The small hall is soon to be renamed the Jubilee Hall to commemorate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

“The decision was partly made in response to comments that using the name ‘small hall’ doesn’t do it justice,” said Mr Pike.

The committee has also recently upgraded the bar area in the main hall and improved the insulation. The next project is an upgrade of the kitchen.
