Went 'berserk' over baby care struggle
A MAN went berserk when police and social services tried to take his partner's baby into care, Lynn magistrates heard on Wednesday.
Jamie Bray (20), of no fixed address, admitted disorderly behaviour at Admiral Nelson Court in Howdale Road, Downham, on November 20. He was fined 198 and ordered to pay 75 costs.
Yvonne Neill, prosecuting, said police were at the block of flats, where social services staff were trying to take Bray's partner's child into care under a protection order. Bray became aggressive and abusive, made threats and at one stage was described as going "berserk."
He fought and struggled on the floor with police trying to arrest him and had to be handcuffed behind his back, said Ms Neill.
Ruth Johnson, for Bray, said he appreciated that the abuse was completely unacceptable and asked the magistrates to bear in mind the unusual circumstances surrounding the offence.
"Emotions were running high. Both he and his partner were extremely distressed. It was a reaction. He didn't mean to behave as he did," said Miss Johnson. The child was now with its father.
Bray was subject to a supervision order. He was complying to the best of his abilities and reporting regularly. He had mental health difficulties and had been referred to the mental health services by his GP but was not on medication at present, she added.
