WEST BILNEY: Service to remember banished Elizabeth 300 years on

A memorial service will be held at a parish church on Thursday night to mark the 300th anniversary of a prominent villager being banished from the building.

The service at St Cecilia’s Church, West Bilney, at 6pm will remember the life of Elizabeth Freke.

Elizabeth was barred from setting foot in the church again on February 14, 1713, on the orders of the then Bishop of Norwich in a dispute over her influence on the church.

The church’s present vicar, the Rev Jane Holmes, will preach on the themes of love and reconciliation at Thursday’s service, which starts at 6pm. A new booklet about Elizabeth will also be on sale from Thursday and an exhibition will be held in July.
