WEST NORFOLK: Anglers warned of enforcement blitz

Illegal anglers have been warned that Environment Agency inspectors are planning an enforcement blitz on two Norfolk rivers tomorrow.

Anyone caught fishing without a valid rod licence could face a fine of up to £2,500.

Among rivers being targeted by the inspectors are the River Wissey and the River Great Ouse.

The agency’s crime team leader, Lesley Robertson, said icy temperatures would not stop inspections.

“We want people to know that we patrol all year round. Fewer people fish in the winter but they must still have the correct licences,” she said.

Enforcement patrols will also be talking to members of the public who are not fishing in a bid to spread the message about enforcement. They hope to gather intelligence about malpractice that non-anglers believe they have seen.

Licences can be bought from post offices, from the Environment Agency website (www.environment-agency.gov.uk) or by phoning 0844 800 5386.
