WEST NORFOLK: cabinet approves plans to give staff pay rise
West Norfolk Council workers will be getting a pay rise in April.
Cabinet members agreed to go ahead with plans to give its staff a one per cent increase in the next financial year.
But West Winch member Paul Foster highlighted the plight faced by the lowest paid workers.
He said: “I think you should consider those on the lowest paid levels who are finding it hard to make savings themselves.
“I hope you could find a little more money for those on the lowest pay grades.”
He was told that the council will match the lowest pay levels agreed nationally for local government workers. West Norfolk opted out of the national pay scheme in the 1990s.
Council leader Nick Daubney said he could not pretend that one per cent was generous but highlighted that the authority offers performance related pay.
Deputy leader Brian Long said: “A low pay rise is better than no pay rise. We are working with the constrains of a budget.
“If we were to offer much bigger pay rises, inevitably the wage bill would go up to unaffordable levels.
“I would rather see staff working well than cut staff as we can’t afford to pay them.”
