West Norfolk coffee queues collect cash

HUNDREDS of people created a big stir in West Norfolk on Friday – but it was all to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support's World's Biggest Coffee Morning.

Norfolk fundraising manager Jenni Maxwell said about 900 events were held in the county, a 25 per cent increase on last year, and it was hoped to have raised more than 140,000.

Stoke Ferry mum Jean Price, whose family's contribution to the fundraising in West Norfolk and Dubai was highlighted in Friday's Lynn News, took in 400 that day from her coffee morning and raffle at Yew House in Furlong Road, beating last year's 325.

Meanwhile, in Dubai, her daughter Sarah Rogers raised a staggering 4,500 for the charity's Norfolk branch by holding a simultaneous event – and she has a barbecue on the beach in November that could add another 2,000 to the total!

In Gaywood Howard Infants' and Nursery School raised 178 when it invited parents for a coffee morning on Thursday.

All 115 pupils were invited to take part and make special cakes using ingredients from the school's fruit and vegetable garden. Headteacher Ann De'ath said: "The focus in school this week was apples so a lot of the children made cakes with apples. We had a fantastic turnout and a lot of generous support from parents."

Ballroom dancing legend Peggy Spencer, who now lives in Lynn in retirement, drew the raffle at the coffee morning organised by Patricia Schofield at the Grange Hotel in Willow Park, off South Wootton Lane.

Mrs Schofield said: "We had a good turnout of 50 people, given the bad weather and another Macmillan coffee morning being held nearby, and we have raised 228."

In Lynn residents at the Norfolk House retirement flats complex in County Court Road, supported by people from the surrounding area, raised about 170 through their coffee morning, bring-and-buy sale and raffle.

Manager Cheryl Powell said: "It was not as well attended as we have had because the weather put some people off, but it was still fairly busy over the two hours."

And customers joined staff at Barclays Bank in Tuesday Market Place for their event, which raised about 180 in three hours and with donations still coming in. Organiser Natalie Moulton said: "We got good feedback from the customers and our home-made cakes went down a treat."

Lecturer Karen Price, who teaches students with learning disabilities at the College of West Anglia, hosted a coffee morning in the Tower Block kitchen with help from Foundation Study students.

"They did a tremendous job, going round selling raffle tickets and cakes, and we had people from all over the college and from outside taking part," she said.

The college's hospitality and front office students also held an event, raising 97 in one hour at the Endeavour Restaurant in the Vancouver building. Hospitality programme manager Hilary Auld said: “We baked and made our own cakes and were well supported by the health and beauty students.”

At the Lynn News a coffee and cakes session organised by advertising department staff raised 78 for the appeal.

Meanwhile in Swaffham the methodist church and the town’s Macmillan Cancer Support group linked up to run a coffee morning, with a bring-and-buy stall and home-made cakes, in the London Street church hall.

The event raised 260 in two hours, with 100 of the total from selling coffees and scones. Church steward Muriel Bean said: “It was tipping it down with rain outside so people looked pretty wet when they came in.”

In Hunstanton as well as coffees, teas, cakes and books were sold and a raffle was held to raise between 300 and 350 for the cause at Old Hunstanton Social Club in Main Road.

Club steward Andy Cozens said: “Bearing in mind the wet weather, we had plenty of people coming in and it was well supported.”

In Downham organiser Denise Whiley said that about 360, roughly the same figure as last year, was raised from a coffee morning and raffle held at Downham Conservative Club in Bridge Street.

In Grimston Marjorie Peach hosted her first Macmillan event at her home, 79 Lynn Road, and raised 270 by selling refreshments, pies, cakes and even bacon rolls at lunchtime.
