West Norfolk crackdown gains results
A CRACKDOWN on uninsured drivers in West Norfolk has contributed to a reduction in fatal and serious injuries, according to the area's head of road policing.
Since new laws giving police officers greater powers to seize uninsured and unlicensed vehicles were introduced at the start of September, 51 illegal vehicles have immediately been taken off the roads in West Norfolk and Breckland.
The new legislation gives officers the power to seize and impound any uninsured or unlicensed vehicle stopped and to issue fixed penalty notices of up to 200 for each offence, if admitted.
Since the scheme started more than 15,000 in fines and recovery charges has been collected, money which has since been put in the national coffers.
The crackdown has contributed to a three per cent year-on-year fall in fatal and serious injury collisions in West Norfolk and Breckland – with 71 recorded for the period April 1 to September 25.
Western area road policing Inspector Julian Moulton said: "Obviously there are many contributory factors which lead to fatal and serious road injury collisions but our targeting of uninsured and unlicensed vehicles in the area recently has certainly removed the threat they pose to other drivers.
"It also allows authorities to recoup road tax and other expenses that we all have to pay, but these drivers have tried to dodge.
"Hopefully these figures will send the message that officers are using these new laws at the first opportunity, so if you do intend to drive an uninsured vehicle, you may well end up with a large fine, points on your licence and a long walk home."
