West Norfolk hit by strong winds
WEST Norfolk seemed to escape with just a thorough soaking when strong winds hit the county yesterday.
Residents were warned to batten down the hatches after forecasters predicted winds of up to 70 miles per hour on the East coast and comparisons were drawn nationally with the Great Storm of 1987.
Police advised motorists across Norfolk to take extra care on the "treacherous" roads and leave plenty of time for their journeys to help prevent accidents.
But despite a number of fallen trees and power cables in other parts of the county, West Norfolk appears to have experienced no serious incidents.
There was some disruption when Lynn ferry was forced to stop running due to the rough conditions in the morning, but it is thought to have been up and running by the afternoon.
Police were also called to Lynn's South Quay just before 1pm after a large piece of metal, measuring around 4ft by 10ft, was spotted hanging from the old grain silo.
Fire crews were called out at around 1.30pm to make the scene safe. No-one was injured.
A Norfolk Police spokesman said the force had dealt with around 40 weather-related calls by 11.15am yesterday morning, mainly relating to fallen trees and power cables, but no-one is thought to have been seriously injured.
There was widespread disruption to roads, rail and air travel in other parts of the country and an estimated 10,000 people were still without power yesterday afternoon.
