WEST NORFOLK: Three hour coastal search for missing kayaker

A report of a missing kayaker sparked a full-scale search along the West Norfolk coast on Saturday.

The man was located after about three hours at Gore Point at Holme, where he was camping.

Hunstanton RNLI was alerted by Yarmouth Coastguard Station at 1.40pm.

The 40-year-old man had last made contact with his mother on Thursday and she had become concerned and informed the coastguards.

The hovercraft searched souoth to Lynn and the lifeboat searched east to Burnham Overy Staithe.

Also involved in the search were Wells RNLI and coastguard teams from Sutton Bridge, Hunstanton, Wells and Cley. Norfolk Police also gave assistance.

Geoff Needham, of Hunstanton RNLI, said the kayaker was unaware that he had been reported missing and apologised for the trouble he had caused.

He was on a charity kayaking trip raising money for the RNLI and cancer research.

Mr Needham said: “He was equipped with camping gear and means of communication but had come ashore in a dead spot as far as communications go.”

Glynn Young, watch manager at Yarmouth Coastguard said: “We’d always recommend that kayakers tell someone at home their plan, including points and times of arrival and departure. It is also advisable to tell the Coastguard of your intentions and any deviation from your plans. You should carry a VHF marine band radio and, if in difficulty, call the Coastguard via channel 16 or dial 999 ask for the Coastguard.”
