Achievement and teaching at Marshland High School need to improve but pupils’ behaviour and the leadership and management of the school have been judged good by Ofsted.

The verdicts were delivered in a new report, which was published last week.

Inspectors who visited the West Walton school last month found not all students were making good progress or attaining the grades they were capable of.

Teaching did not always meet the needs or abilities of all the students. Marking did not always explain to students how they could improve their work.

The report said some plans to speed pupils’ rate of progress and improve teaching had not been in place long enough to see their full effect.

But strengths included rising standards, particularly with GCSE results for 2013 on course to be the Marshland’s best ever.

The amount of good teaching was also said to be increasing and most students worked hard in most lessons.

“The way in which teachers and other staff support students with their personal development is a significant strength,” said the report.

Together, the headteacher and senior leaders were found to be bringing about significant and rapid improvements.

Headteacher Elizabeth Dormor said the school’s overall effectiveness was judged to require improvement, which she described as the new label for grade three, which was previously described as satisfactory until September of this year.

She said: “We are delighted that the inspection team has recognised many of the strengths of our school.

“We know that there is further work to be done to enable our students to achieve even better outcomes but we are pleased that the inspection team has affirmed we are making good progress towards this goal.”

Shaun Prendergast, chairman of the school’s governing body, added: “The new Ofsted framework has raised the bar considerably but the school has risen to the challenge well.”
