West Winch woman dies after crash
A TRAVEL advisor who had just launched her own business and recently married has died in hospital almost a week after a car crash.
The death of Nicola Payne, of Sandover Close, West Winch, at Colchester Hospital on Thursday was described by police as "unexpected".
The 32-year-old had been airlifted from the scene of a crash, on the A12 in Stratford St Mary, on the border of Suffolk and Essex – where her family is from – on the afternoon of Sunday, January 27.
In a statement issued via police, Mrs Payne's devastated parents Neil and Carol said: "Nicola achieved a lot in her short life, both at work and in her personal life.
"She married James in 2006, and they recently moved to Norfolk where they were making a new and happy life together.
"Nicola was a loving wife, daughter, and sister. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her".
Mrs Payne was a front seat passenger in a green Ford Focus when it crashed off the road and into a tree, leading to an hour-long closure of the road.
The driver – thought to be husband, former Royal Navy man James – was also airlifted to hospital with serious injuries, but has now been discharged.
In October, a smiling Mrs Payne featured in the Lynn News to promote her new business venture as an at-home advisor for travel firm Travel Counsellors.
She had carved out a career for herself in the travel industry, gaining experience at Co-op Travel in her home town of Chelmsford, Essex, and later at Wickford where she became a manager before moving to West Norfolk with James.
As well as her husband and parents, Mrs Payne also leaves an older sister Sara.
