West Norfolk: Do you have the heart to volunteer?

AS we draw closer to Valentine’s Day, the East of England Ambulance Service is asking people across Norfolk to mark the day with a pledge to save lives in the community.

Community first responders (CFR) are volunteers who are trained by the ambulance service to attend emergency calls in the area where they live or work.

More are needed across the whole of Norfolk, but particularly in Lynn, Hunstanton, Dersingham and Fakenham.

Andrew Barlow, Norfolk’s community partnership manager, said: “Valentine’s Day is traditionally about showing affection for a loved one, and we really want people to expand this to include a love of their community.

A responder is sent to a potentially life-threatening emergency in the first vital minutes before the ambulance response arrives on scene.

Even those who live outside of an area can still volunteer if they can get to the location within minutes, they could still help keep the patient alive and stabilised until the ambulance arrives.

“First responders play a really important role in life-threatening emergencies such as loss of consciousness and cardiac arrest, and are often the first on scene because they live or work so close to an incident.

“Help save a life, this is the ultimate gift you can give.”

Anyone between the ages of 18 and 80 can volunteer and the training takes just one day.
