What should happen to Tuesday Market Place?

Residents are to have their say on the future of Lynn's historic Tuesday Market Place.

The debate regarding parking, traffic and how best to attract visitors will be addressed in a series of public consultations.

West Norfolk Council last week invited representatives of local people, businesses, market traders and planners to a special consultation event, but residents as a whole will have to wait until early next year to have their say.

Council leader Nick Daubney said: "The debate about the usage of the historic market place has been ongoing for many years.

"That it is a magnificent open space is not questioned, but over the years the debate has centred around car parking in the market place and a whole raft of other, potentially conflicting, uses.

"To determine how it should be used is not an easy ask."

People attending last week's workshop shared ideas, filled out questionnaires and toured the market place to photograph the areas they felt could be improved.

The collected data was then uploaded into a computer using specialist computer software called Spaceshaper, which has been designed to encourage debate and creative thinking.

Those taking part decided the Tuesday Market Place was important economically and socially to the town and they wanted to see it used in a greater variety of ways.

They thought the market place needed to be "rebalanced" so it is an attractive and easy place for shoppers, working people, residents and visitors to use throughout the year.

It was also felt some traffic and parking may need to be kept as this may contribute to its vibrancy.

A wider public consultation will take place in early 2008, ahead of the formal launch on the design competition later in the year which will see national architects submit their ideas for the space.
