WN Search and rescue team in action

VOLUNTEER emergency team Norfolk Lowland Search and Rescue saw a record year in 2007.

The team, which helps police search for missing people in marshes, woodland and any other non-mountainous terrain, was called out 24 times last year and got its first foothold in the west of the county, with three volunteers signing up in and around Lynn following a Lynn News report.

The year also saw the formation of the new mountain bike team of searchers and one of the group's dogs reaching Association of Lowland Search and Rescue standards.

The team, which began life in 1999, is continually looking for volunteers, especially in West Norfolk, where a dedicated team could be created if a further four or five volunteers came forward.

It got its first call of this year on Saturday when police asked for help in an early hours search for a missing man in Gaywood.

The man turned up safe and well of his own accord at 5.30am.
