Woman (84) died after fall in hospital
AN 84-YEAR-OLD Dersingham woman died days after breaking her leg at Lynn's Queen Elizabeth Hospital, an inquest heard on Friday.
Joyce Standeven, of West Road, died in Gayton Ward on July 3 after climbing out of bed and tripping over her catheter six days before.
Greater Norfolk coroner William Armstrong said Mrs Standeven, a retired factory worker originally from London, died of bronchial pneumonia contributed to by the fracture.
"This was an accidental death arising from a fall," he concluded.
Mrs Standeven was admitted for a procedure on her bladder on June 26 this year and was kept in.
The following day, a visitor alerted staff and Mrs Standeven was found sitting on the floor with the catheter still attached to the bed.
Gayton Ward manager, Cathryn Abbs-Rowe, said the patient was fully aware of what was happening.
An x-ray later revealed she had fractured a bone in her leg and despite treatment her condition deteriorated.
Miss Abbs-Rowe said each of the 37 beds on the ward had help buttons and there were six members of staff and two students on duty that day.
Mr Armstrong said: "She would have known that if she needed help she could have summoned help. She was given immediate attention and there is no suggestion she was given anything but appropriate care."
