Young people encouraged to vote in election
WITH the general election looming, West Norfolk Council has launched a campaign to encourage young people to register to vote and make sure their voice is heard.
"It's your vote!" is aimed at young people aged 18 to 24, who may never
have voted in a parliamentary election before.
Acting returning officer, Mr Ray Harding, said: "If you have turned 18
since 2005 or will be celebrating your 18th birthday in the next few months, you need to make sure that you are on the register of electors if you want to have a say in who runs the country.
"We're focusing our campaign on young people, but our message applies
to all. It's your vote – make sure you can use it."
National research shows 56 per cent of people aged between 18 and 24 do
not register to vote and to help spread the word, the council has teamed-up with Lynn's College of West Anglia to encourage students to register.
Electoral Registration staff will be visiting the college next Tuesday to help students to complete the necessary registration forms and to find out more about voting.
Mr Harding said many people did not realise they need to re-register every year, but the council sends out registration forms to households across the borough each autumn.
He added: "Anyone who is unsure whether they have completed the form,
or who has subsequently moved house, can simply give us a call to check that they are registered, or they can download a new form from the website and return it to us."
