Nine days after her 18th birthday Elaine Adcock married John Gittens at St Faith’s Church, Gaywood on April 7, 1954, a few days after he was demobbed.
Both Lynn born, they met almost three years before when Elaine was 15 and John 17 and eventually got engaged.
Virtually everyone at their wedding apparently thought it would not last. It was said “they are too young” and relatives and friends were not shy of telling them that even as the years passed.
John started his career as a trainee photographer at the Lynn News & Advertiser at 16 after leaving school. Elaine worked at the Post Office as a telephonist after leaving the High School.
After two years in the RAF on National Service John returned to the East Midland Press, owner of the Lynn News and various other newspapers, at the Wisbech Advertiser for a short while then returned to the Lynn News.
In 1956 John left the Lynn News to start his own photographic business in Lynn, opening a shop in Norfolk Street in 1957, which he and Elaine operated until shortly before emigrating to California in 1962 “for a much more clement climate”. This they found in Ventura where they have lived and worked since. They started their own photography business there which they operated until 2000. They still love photography and love to go off in their motorhome and take scenic pictures of the Western United States.
yesterday marled their 60th anniversary. Their twins girl Victoria and Lesley live in Ventura and younger sister Christine moved to Eugene, Oregon with her family.
They would like to hear from anyone they knew and can be contacted at 3662 Loma Vista Road, Ventura, CA 93003; John-Elaine@dslextreme.com; (805) 642-1212.
