A Tesco worker from Downham plans to take on the challenge of cycling 380 miles in six days, stopping at 26 Tesco stores, to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Gary Stabler, 22, who works as a better service manager at the Downham store, is hoping to complete the charity cycle next week as part of Tesco’s nationwide charity weekend - Calling All Heroes.

He said: “I’m a keen cyclist and try to go out at least once a week. I suggested doing a charity cycle ride to my manager and it just snowballed from there.”

Mr Stabler is due to set off on Monday on his journey which will take him to 26 stores across East Anglia, stopping to sleep in five stores along the way.

He said: “I have been training, but mostly inside because the weather has been so rubbish.

“This will be the first time I will have cycled such a great distance. I’m quite looking forward to it, I like a challenge and can’t wait to take this one on. I am a bit nervous, but I’m sure once I’m on the bike and ready to ho the nerves will disappear.”

The challenge will run from February 4-9, and Mr Stabler is hoping to raise around £1,000.

To sponsor him, either head to Downham’s Tesco store where there are collection buckets, or go online to www.justgiving.com/gary-cycles
