Almost 800 years have passed since its charter was first granted, but business remains as brisk as ever at Swaffham’s popular weekly market.

Around 35 stallholders regularly trade at the traditional Saturday market and shoppers travel from miles around to browse the range of goods on offer.

The history of the market dates all the way back to 1215, during the reign of King John, when a charter allowing for a weekly market and three fairs to be staged per year was granted to Swaffham.

And, although planning is in the early stages, a working group has now been established to organise events to mark the 800th anniversary of the granting of the charter next year.
