A Swaffham secondary school’s art department has been hailed as one of Britain’s best by the town’s MP.

Sculptures and paintings by students from the Nicholas Hamond Academy were among 200 pieces displayed at an exhibition hosted by the Swaffham Lions at the Assembly Rooms over the bank holiday weekend.

The show was opened by South West Norfolk MP Elizabeth Truss, who said the school’s art department was “among the best in the country.”

Department head Amy Lee said the MP’s praise was “overwhelming.”

She added: “It’s nice for someone to come in from the outside and see that in the school.”

The exhibition featured work by more than 50 artists, including many members of the Swaffham Art Group.

Although admission was free, donations made during the weekend will go to Lions charities.
