A Swaffham flood relief firm has been overwhelmed by the demand for help following the wave of storms and tidal surges that have battered Britain in recent weeks.

Staff from Floodsense, based in Bears Lane, have spent the last few weeks helping people along the Norfolk coast and in the south west come to terms with the damage caused by the weather.

Managing director Kevin Williams, who has run the company for its five years, said he estimated that the country had seen around three times the normal rate of flood warnings and severe flood warnings during the past month.

He said: “It has been quite extreme this time around. I was in a restoration company for 15 years and I have never seen storms like this.”

The firm, which is planning to move to larger premises in the town next month, offers a range of flood barriers and prevention tools, as well as risk assessments, restoration services and advice.

Mr Williams said many of the people his company has worked with during the recent bad weather had not been aware of the steps they could take themselves to protect their property.

He said tens of thousands of pounds of damage could be done by only a small depth of water inside a building and there are steps that all homeowners can take regardless of their individual budgets,

Mr Williams says records show a rising trend of rainfall dating back as far as the 1920s and he fears the continuing pattern of extreme weather, coupled with government plans to cut funding further, will mean people would have to take action themselves.

He added: “Flooding is not going to go away, in fact it is getting more extreme.

“Property and business owners need to start taking the initiative in protecting their own assets.”
