Thousands of drivers face overnight diversions next week with the closure of Cross Keys Bridge on the A17 at Sutton Bridge.
The bridge will close to vehicles between 7pm-6am from Monday to Thursday for essential maintenance and installation of a new gantry to cut the speed of lorries going on to the bridge from the Norfolk side. Pedestrian access will be disrupted on Monday night, as the bridge has to be swung for the works, and pedestrians will be able to cross only between 10pm-10.30pm and 3.30am-4am.
Drivers are asked to follow the diversion route via the A1101 and A47.
Lincolnshire County Council said the bridge, built in 1897, needs essential maintenance to prolong its life and new measures to protect it from damage caused by the vibrations of HGVs braking on the bridge.
HGVs from Lincolnshire are slowed by two roundabouts on the approach, but there’s a straight run from the Norfolk side which leads to late braking on the bridge.
