Greenfingered volunteers are getting their hanging baskets and planters at the ready as they officially launch their 2014 In Bloom campaign.

Community groups, Fenland District Council officers and business energy consultancy, CUB (UK) Ltd, got together at Delfland Nursery in Doddington last week in preparation for this year’s March In Bloom.

The volunteers spent the day planting a variety of plants such as petunias and lobelias, ahead of the In Bloom judging on Tuesday, July 8.

With spring in the air and the weather improving, it is the perfect time for the volunteers to get planting ready for spring.

“It’s great to get extra people to help out and take time out of their days.

“Without their support our groups wouldn’t be able to achieve the things they do”, said Rebecca Robinett, the district council’s street pride co-ordinator.

She went on to say: “Its little things like this that can really brighten up a town centre and hopefully the judges recognise and reward the effort local residents have put in.”

The flowers were supplied by the team at Delfland Nursery, who will also maintain the plants until they are ready to blossom.

Defland’s retail manager Chris Searle and his team helped the volunteers on the day.

He said: ‘It’s lovely to see a great bunch of people getting their hands dirty and putting time into projects like this and we are really happy to help.”

During the day, volunteers filled tubs with compost and plant feed.

The team included first time gardeners to green fingered veterans.

First time gardeners from CUB (UK) Ltd, which is based in Dartford Road, March, enjoyed helping to find the best flowers for planters.

Amber Mount, who works in the firm’s business support team, was among the volunteers taking part on the day.

She said: “I’ve never planted anything and didn’t know what to expect but I certainly have the gardening bug.

“I especially look forward to being able to see the baskets and planters in bloom while on my dinner break in the town centre.”

Anyone else who is interested in supporting or volunteering with the March in Bloom project should contact Rebecca Robinett at the district council.
