A family farm’s successful diversification into rape seed oil production was outlined during an NFU visit.
Downham and Southery NFU members and guests enjoyed a tour of Larchwood Foods in Fincham on Monday.
Hugh Mason and his family have been farming in the area for more than 200 years but three years ago invested in a state of the art oil seed processing and bottling plant to produce cold pressed rape seed cooking oil.
Since then Mr Hugh’s has become a hugely popular brand.
The visit included a tour of the site. Farm manager Chris Legg discussed the farming side and its development plans while production manager Daren McClagish outlined how the oil is produced. Chef Gary Coyne demonstrated how it can be used to make a mayonnaise . Mr Mason said: “We are proud of what we do and pleased to show it to people.”
Branch chairman Ed Lankfer said the tour was well attended. He said: “This visit has shown how a business can diversify and be successful.”
