Once again Downham’s annual water festival will be making a splash when dragon boats will be racing down the river.

The festival is now in its eighth year and attracts thousands of visitors from as far a field as Devon to battle it out on the water.

Thousands of people are expected to descend onto the banks of the Great Ouse Relief Channel on Sunday to watch the action, which kicks off at 10am.

A total of 18 teams have entered into this year’s races, which are organised by Downham Town Council with help from Gable Events.

Frank Daymond said: “We have people travelling from Essex, Kent and Devon as it is such a good event.

“We always have a good atmosphere on the day.

“Our dragon boat race is the best value in the area as we only charge £160 per boat.”

Dragon boat teams will be competing throughout the day from 10am to 5pm, along the river from Hythe Bridge.

Spectators will also be able to browse around the stalls which will be held along the banks.

The event will also include funfair rides along with food stalls.

There is no entry fee to the event.

The event is organised by a small committee of councillors and friends.
