Fakenham town mayor Adrian Vertigan is pictured with air cadet Tom Clifton who has been named as the top cadet in the Norfolk and Suffolk Wing of the Air Training Corps.
Tom, 18, claimed the award after returning from a trip to Ascension Island in the south Atlantic. As an added honour he is appointed the Lord Lieutenant’s cadet for 2014.
Mr Vertigan presented the shield after formally inspecting members of 2534(Fakenham) squadron on parade at their headquarters in the grounds of Fakenham College. Mr Vertigan, a former submariner in the Royal Navy, congratulated all the cadets on their smart turnout and excellent drill, adding that Fakenham was proud to have both air and army cadets in the town.
He particularly praised Cadet Warrant Officer Clifton on his accomplishment. He had been one of twelve cadets from Norfolk and Suffolk to fly with the RAF to Ascension Island, visiting RAF and USAF bases there and enjoying various recreational activities. The cadets had also helped clear rubbish from one of the beaches to create a path down to the sea for baby turtles. CWO Clifton is the second cadet from the Fakenham squadron to have received the shield.
