A couple whose daughter was murdered four years ago are backing the Lynn News Help Our Hospice Appeal with a fundraising event
Peter Thorpe, farm manager for the Stradsett Estate, and his wife Jane, lost their daughter Becky aged just 29 in March 2010 when her partner Michael Tucker, shot her dead in the bath at the Compasses in Snettisham, the pub they ran together.
After the shooting, Tucker moved her body into a freezer where it was discovered two weeks later after he had fled to Hampshire and then the Isle of Wight, where he was arrested. He received a life sentence in 2011 for her murder.
Mr Thorpe said: “Becky always thought Norfolk Hospice, Tapping House, was a good cause and she had started fundraising for it in her capacity as landlady, but had also raised money for it prior to that. She always liked to help other people.
“After her death, we have carried on fundraising in her memory. We have found it is a way of keeping her alive.”
Since Becky’s death they have raised thousands of pounds for causes including the hospice Denver playing field – because Becky played in the village hockey team – the cancer unit at Lynn’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital and the King’s Lynn and West Norfolk Parkinson’s UK Support Group. Since 2010 they have raised £2,800.
Mr Thorpe added: “My family has been helped by the hospice following Becky’s death so we know first-hand about the good work which it does.”
He is holding Becky’s Charity Bingo in aid of the Lynn News Help Our Hospice Appeal on Saturday, March 29, at Denver Village Hall. All the prizes have been donated by individuals and supporting businesses. Doors will open at 6.30pm with eyes down at 7.30pm.
