Goody bags which are presented to competitors at the Bespak Grand East Anglia Run are being packed at Aspires in Fincham, ready for the big day.

This year’s goody bags will contain the usual medals and leaflets along with coconut water, pistachio nuts and bath lotion, and Pasta Pots and Mars Bars which have been kindly donated by Mars.

Aspires is a professional contract packing company with a difference. It is a day service for people with learning and physical disabilities which offers valuable work experience and there is currently 45 people access the service with 25 attending each day, headed up by a staff of five and a team of dedicated volunteers. The income they generate from contract work, then pays for activities and outings, treats and meals for those people attending the day service.

Jackie Murphy from Aspires said: “Our service is primarily about providing valuable work experience for our users, enabling them to master new skills and raise their self esteem by participating in real work.

“Our quality standards are high, but the work takes place in a fun environment with lots of music and laughter. We rely on the contract work to provide a purpose for our people and to fund activities.

“In order to provide meaningful work for so many people we are constantly seeking additional contracts, so we are very grateful to West Norfolk Council for entrusting us with the goody bags for the Bespak Grand East Anglia Run event. This is exciting for everyone as we never know what goodies we are getting until they turn up, and then it’s all hands on deck to get the bags stuffed in time for the run.”

Roger Partridge, the council’s Race Director, said: “Aspires have been with us since the beginning in 2006 and we wouldn’t be able to get the goody bags together without them. They do an incredible job every year.”

Once filled, the goody bags are collected by Lynnstar, who then leave them in the lorry on Tuesday Market Place for distribution on the day by the Scouts.

The 10k Bespak GEAR will be held around Lynn on Sunday, May 4;it is a UKA and BARR Gold-Graded event with entry at £17 for affiliated runners and £19 for unaffiliated runners. To enter, runners must be aged 15 or over on race day.
