A Swaffham funeral director has called for people to get on their bikes to help meet the costs of funeral services for children.
Andrew Francis has formed the Francis Foundation, a new charity which aims to fund the costs of a service for any dead child in the Breckland area.
And he wants supporters to join his team for the charity’s first major fundraising event this summer, a 2,014 mile static cycle ride this summer.
Mr Francis said that, while his firm does not charge for children’s funeral services, many others do.
And he and his staff were inspired to launch the charity by a desire to help families at a time of distress.
He said: “It’s bad enough losing a child, let alone receiving a bill for it also.”
“We believe it’s the first charity of its kind and, I hope and pray, a charity that one day will become obsolete.”
The initial aim is to cover the costs of all children’s funerals in the Breckland district by the end of this year, before expanding further.
The charity is now appealing for volunteers to join them for the cycle ride, which will take place at the firm’s offices in Lynn Road over the weekend of June 7 and 8. A fundraising ball is also planned for later in the year.
Anyone interested in taking part in the cycle ride is asked to phone Mr Francis 01760 720200 for more information.
