The Highways Agency says it has “limited options” to complete the roadworks on the A47 outside Lynn.
The misery caused for villagers and businesses close to the roadworks, which are running between the Pullover and Hardwick roundabouts, was outlined in Tuesday’s Lynn News.
Motorists trying to escape the jams are filing through Clenchwarton. Norfolk Arena has been forced to cancel a speedway meeting on Friday and had people dropping out of events over the weekend due to the long traffic queues.
Some motorists were taking more than an hour to travel from Sutton Bridge to Lynn.
Highways Agency project manage Ranjit Mistry said: “We are doing everything we can to keep traffic moving while we carry out this vital maintenance on three bridges on the A47, and aim to be finished by the end of July.
“We have very limited options for re-phasing the work – undertaking the works during the summer reduces the amount of time that the roadworks have to be in place. However, we have a dedicated customer information line, available 24/7 on 0300 123 5000, where people can get information about how their journeys might be affected, and I am engaging with the business owners and event organisers contacted by the Lynn News.”
