With romance in the air this week, a Hunstanton couple will celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary just before Valentine’s Day.

Douglas Turner, 78 and his wife Barbara, 74, laid solid foundations for their marriage when they tied the knot in February 13, 1954, following a chance meeting years earlier while he was building a wall.

Three days after their wedding in Oxford Registry Office, Mr Turner was bound for Egypt to complete his national service.

The couple went on to have four children, Wendy, 57, Heather, 56, Evelyn, 55 and 43-year-old Lee, who lives in Wormegay.

The couple first moved to Hunstanton in 1997.

Mrs Turner said of the secret of their long wedding: “Be truthful and loving with one another. I would advise newlyweds to talk things through, but people don’t do that these days. We have had 60 happy years together.”

In our picture, the couple are shown with a large photo taken at Gretna Green on the occasion of their golden wedding and the small picture is from their wedding day.
