Samaritans will be holding a drop-in day in Swaffham on Saturday to let people from the town and surrounding area know more about their work.
Volunteers from the King’s Lynn branch will be using the premises of Swaffham & Litcham Home Hospice at 17-19 Brocks Road on the Eco Tech Park.
Between 10am and 4pm the public are invited to pop in at any time to meet some of the volunteers, chat about their work, enjoy refreshments and watch a short work in which volunteers talk about what they do.
The King’s Lynn Samaritans branch receives more than 25,000 contacts a year via telephone calls, visits and emails and is looking to introduce contacting via texting.
The branch constantly needs listening volunteers, who receive nationally-acclaimed training, as well supporters to join its Friends group which has an important fundraising role.
Anyone who can’t get along to Swaffham but would like to know more about volunteering for the branch can call 01553 761616 or visit its website: www.kingslynnsmaritans.co.uk.
A Samaritans spokesman said: “This gives people living in Swaffham and its surrounding area the chance to meet some of our volunteers and find out at first-hand what we do.”
King’s Lynn is part of a Samaritans network of more than 200 branches who are available 24 hours a day every day of the year, including Christmas and New Year’s Day.
“Samaritans is the only health-related charity which operates 24/7, offering support to people with a whole range of emotional issues, some of which can lead to thoughts of suicide,” said the Samaritans spokesman.
“Of course a great many of our callers are not suicidal, but need someone to listen to them when life has become difficult.”
