Managers at Lynn’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital have defended their handling of mental health illnesses among staff amid claims of rocketing levels of sickness relating to stress, anxiety and depression.
Reports yesterday claimed that the number of staff who have been affected by the problems at the Gayton Road site have almost doubled to nearly 200 over the last five years.
But the hospital has disputed the figures and Mark Vaughan, the trust’s human resources director, said: “The wellbeing of staff at the Trust is of paramount importance to us.
“We support our staff by ensuring that everyone has access to a variety of provided support networks, including in-house occupational health services, providing access to nurses and a physician, a chaplaincy service and an external wellbeing package which is accessible 24 hours a day for telephone and ‘face-to-face’ counselling as required.
“Referral to our Clinical Psychology service is also available.”
Mr Vaughan added: “Our managers follow sickness management procedures and we have recently significantly improved the number of performance reviews that are completed, ensuring that staff are able to identify and discuss any concerns at the earliest opportunity.”
