A Howard Junior School student has been chosen to represent Great Britain at the World Fight Sport and Martial Arts Council (WFMC) World Championships in Croatia this October.

Ten- year-old Daniel McNeice, from King’s Reach, is a dedicated kickboxer who trains most nights and is just two steps away from becoming a black belt.

His dad, Alan, said: “He first started kickboxing four-and-a-half years ago and he trains very hard. He enters a lot of competitions and was over the moon to find out he had been chosen.”

Daniel has trained at Tang Soo Do in Hunstanton since moving to Lynn.

Alan said: “It’s good for a kid of that age to do something like this rather than sitting in front of the TV all day.

“This is the first time he will have been on the world stage and although he is nervous, it will be a huge learning curve for him.”

The championships are being held in Umag, Croatia, between October 21 and 26. Daniel needs sponsors to fund his entry, travel and accommodation for the competition – all of which comes to £799.

Wayne Edwards, WFMC President, said: “Unfortunately with kickboxing being an amateur sport, it is the individual’s responsibility to find their own funding to attend the tournament. Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated.”

His father added: “What we have to do now is raise the funds to send him to Croatia. He’s been washing cars at weekends and we’ve been sending out letters asking for sponsorship.

“The school are holding a rock concert to raise money for him – they have been so supportive and have gone out of their way to help us.”

Greg Hill, headteacher, said: “Daniel has a very good track record at competitions across the country and he stands a very good chance of winning. He just needs sponsorship to get him there.

“This young man has worked exceptionally hard to get this far and to support him is a great honour – especially if he wins the competition.”

He added: “If the people of Lynn get behind him, that would be great. He’s such a role model for the other children.”
