Shop staff were met with a flooded car park when they arrived at work on Lynn’s Hardwick retail park yesterday morning, with some heading straight back home to get their wellies.
A mains water pipe burst behind Currys and water flooded the car parks of The Range and Jollyes pet food superstore, as well as the road leading to Tesco.
At Jollyes, manager Lucy Beal said as soon as she saw how much water there was she went home to get her wellies so she could wade into the store.
Marcus Perks, manager at The Range, said: “We discovered it at 7.10am. It was probably about a foot to a foot and a half deep.”
Mr Perks said they had not had any customers until 11am and, although the car park was reusable by late morning, it was very messy.
He added: “The car park is disgusting because of the amount of mess that has been left. To give Anglian Water their due, though, they were here within 20 minutes, closed the water off and started repairing the mains.”
Homes in South Lynn, West Lynn and Clenchwarton were left without water and others suffered low pressure.
A spokesman for Anglian Water said three technicians had been despatched and had isolated the burst.
The water supply was back to normal by 9.30am and work will continue today (Tuesday) to mend the pipe and repair the tarmac around it.
