A man who argued with an elderly couple before attacking one of them with a hammer has been jailed for five and a half years.

Danny Thorpe, 68, formerly of York Road, Lynn, was sentenced at Norwich Crown Court last Wednesday.

He had previously been convicted by a jury of a charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, but cleared of a second charge of actual bodily harm.

The court had earlier been told the case related to a dispute between Thorpe and a man and a woman who were walking near his farmland at Clenchwarton.

Thorpe, who had claimed he was acting in self-defence, repeatedly struck the man, causing 11 separate wounds.

The victim’s injuries included a serious head wound, for which he had to be taken to hospital in order for it to be glued back together.
