West Norfolk mayor and mayoress, Barry and Christine Ayres, got their hands dirty when they helped create clay soldiers for a First World War commemoration project at Providence Street Youth Centre.

The project is run by SPEADA, but has had helping hands from West Norfolk and King’s Lynn Young Carers groups, along with hoardes of volunteers.

Lead youth support worker Tracy Spearing said: “It’s going really well so far, we’re at around 300 soldiers out of over 500 and the project finishes on July 4.

“The young people really enjoyed having the mayor visit,it was like having a superstar come to the centre and there were big grins all across the table. One of our boys challenged the mayor to a game of pool and the mayor lost!”
