Nine-year-old Piers Henderson has his sights firmly set on a career in Formula One.
Having already taken the karting world by storm with significant success for his tender years racing for the JM Racing Team, the Thornham driver, who celebrated his birthday just three weeks ago has even more to celebrate now as he has recently secured sponsorship from Hayes & Storr Solicitors.
Piers’ father Steven Henderson said: “He attends Glebe School where they have been incredibly in supportive in allowing him time off when travelling to some of our more distant race meetings.
“This year has included two visits to each of Larkhall in Scotland, Glan Y Gors in Wales and Rowrah in Cumbria for the LGM National Championship.”
Piers did very well in the British Karting Grand Prix in August where, despite breakdowns in two heats, he still came 14th of 31 of the best drivers in the country.
He was third at Buckmore Park and sixth at Kimbolton. In his last race he came fourth in practice and fourteenth in qualifying. Steven said: “This wasn’t reflected in his final result as a battle with another racer left his rear bumper hanging off, and the Marshalls called him in.
“This a scenario we have come up against many times this year as the older more experienced drivers didn’t like finding themselves up against a (then) eight-year- old at the front. ”
Piers’ summer season comes to an end on November 3 with the final round of the Trent Valley Kart Club championship.
He had to miss two rounds of this competition as the dates clashed with the National.
His next race is on Sunday at the Lincolnshire Kart Racing Club in Fulbeck. He then heads into the winter series and next year will include one or both of the LGM National Championship and the British Championship, along with a Club competition and the Kart Grand Prix again.
James Morgan, Partner at Hayes & Storr said: “Hayes & Storr are pleased to be able to support such a singular local talent.
“Hopefully helping him at this early stage of his career will ensure he maximises the huge talent he obviously has.”
