Downham’s Christmas decorations will sparkle even more thanks to a £2,500 revamp this year.

Traders who organise the town’s festive decorations are looking to make Downham Town Clock a centre piece for this year’s event.

Scores of LED lights will be strung from the clock to surrounding properties after the town council’s property committee approved plans for the new feature during a meeting last week.

Christmas lights organiser Maureen Hibling, who is a member of the Downham Chamber of Trade, is delighted with the decision.

She said: “I am pleased as we can now go ahead and place orders. We are going to make a canopy from the clock.

“We have considered doing it in the past but it would have been too heavy with standard bulbs. This will make a focal point with epic colour.”

The revamped decorations will light up the town from Sunday, November 30, when they will be officially turned on.

The town’s Christmas decorations cost £2,000 each year with the largest bill being insurance.

Committee members raise funds throughout the year to ensure the town is looking its best during the festive season.

Mrs Hibling said: “The decorations really enhance the feeling around the town during December and encourages people to come.”
