A dedicated group of volunteers has celebrated the official opening of Boughton Fen Wildlife Walk after years of hard work to preserve the natural beauty of the area.

Over the last seven years, an enthusiastic group have been working on Boughton Fen on behalf of Boughton Parish Council to improve the natural habitat and raise its classification within its status as a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Lottery funding made it possible for volunteers to create a circular wildlife walk around the 44acre site of wetland so it would become more accessible to walkers.

Chairman of the Boughton Fen Committee, Mark Pogmore, said: “Everyone has done a magnificent job and we are immensely proud to have such a wonderful asset on our doorstep which has provided the village with an award-winning wildlife walk.”

The sun shone as volunteers and visitors walked the cut paths and boardwalk, which had been created and maintained by the committee and its army of willing volunteers.

Joy Boldero, whose late husband Charles walked most of the county and wrote many books about their walks, cut the ribbon to officially open the route.
