A father and son from Oxborough are taking on huge charity challenges, with one taking on a 500 mile cycle ride and the other planning to beat his fear of heights by walking over the O2 Arena.

Adam Doughty, 40, will set off on his journey to Edinburgh today, before starting the five-day cycle ride to Richmond Park, in London, tomorrow to raise funds for national charity, Missing People.

His 10-year-old son, Oscar, was inspired by his father’s attempt to raise £2,000 and decided to tackle his fear of heights in his very own challenge for Cancer Research as a thanks for the treatment his grandmother received.

Adam said: “My mum was diagnosed with breast cancer and had some fantastic treatment at Addenbrooke’s, she got the all clear and Oscar just wanted to do something to support cancer treatment.

“He and his nan had been down to London and saw people walking over the Arena and Oscar is really scared of heights but he’s so determined to do it. It’s a huge thing but he’s very keen and hopes it will get rid of his fear.

“He wanted something that would push him out of his comfort zone and we’re so proud of him for doing it.”

Oscar will be completing the walk over the O2 Arena in August.

Adam is looking forward to his trip across the UK and has been training hard in preparation, even losing one-and-a-half stone since taking up the challenge six months ago.

He said: “It’s not something I have ever done before – particularly leaving the family for so long – but I’m looking forward to the experience and it’s for such a great cause.

“I’ve managed to raise the amount of money needed, but more importantly I’ve helped raise awareness with those who have never heard of the charity before.”

Adam said: “I’ve been to Scotland before but it will be nice to see some of the countryside – I’m probably looking forward to this part the most.

“I’ve certainly got the largest challenge because on the first day alone we will be climbing 7,500 feet despite coming from the flattest part of the country.”

The team will be cycling a total of 114miles on the first day, spread over 11 hours.
