A breast cancer patient has thanked Lynn’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital for its “amazing” care by asking for donations instead of presents for her 70th birthday.

Susan Groom, of Station Road, Stow Bridge, was diagnosed with breast cancer around 18 months ago and underwent a mastectomy to remove breast tissue at the QEH six months ago.

Miss Groom, who has learning difficulties, wanted to raise money to thank those who treated her, and decided to ask for donations in aid of the hospital’s breast unit instead of presents for her birthday last month. A total of £300 was donated, when a surprise party was held for her at the Andel Lodge Hotel in Tottenhill.

The party was organised by her sisters Dolly Carter and Janet Howard and attended by more than 80 family members and friends.

Mrs Carter, of East Winch, said it was truly a night to remember. She said: “The party was fantastic because all the family were there, including cousins who we hadn’t seen for 14-odd years.

“It was a magical night. Susan wanted to thank the hospital as it was absolutely amazing. It was marvellous.”

The money will be going towards the QEH breast cancer unit development fund.
