Plans for a new playing field and environmental area would be a major boost to a school near Fakenham and the community it serves, a county councillor has claimed.

Several residents have already objected to the application for the Grove Farm site in Sculthorpe, which is opposite the village’s primary school.

Applicants Colegate Management Ltd, who are based in Norwich, are seeking permission to build a new school field, ecology study area and car park for 22 vehicles on the land.

The plans were submitted to North Norfolk District Council last month and five nearby residents have already registed objections, though details of their concerns have not been published.

County council highways officials have also raised concerns about access to the site and whether the parking spaces would be solely for school use.

But Marie Strong, who represents the village on Norfolk County Council, said she believed the scheme would be “very useful” to the area if it was given the go-ahead.

“The school is desperate for parking and football pitches. The developers have decided to do more.”

The village’s parish council has yet to give its response to the proposals.
